Aerangis seegeri Senghas, Orchidee (Hamburg) 34: 23 (1983).
Description:
Plant very small with a short stem 1-2 cm long. Leaves 2—4, arranged in a small fan in one plane, elliptic, folded and almost petiolate at the base, bilobed at the apex, dark green, 3.5 cm long, 2.5 cm wide. Inflorescences 1-3, axillary or arising below the leaves, pendent, bearing 6-12 flowers spaced 1 cm apart throughout or in the apical half, up to 25 cm long. Flowers star-shaped, 2 cm in diameter, pale green or yellowish green, all the parts reflexed in the upper half; sepals similar to each other narrowly triangular, 8 mm long, 1 mm wide; petals linear, long acuminate, slightly shorter than sepals, 1 mm wide; lip similar to the petals but slightly wider at the base; spur parallel with the ovary at first, then curved downwards, with a characteristic elongated, bulb-like inflation just behind the apex, 18 mm long.
Habitat:
Epiphyte in coastal forest; sea level to 1500 m; flowering April to June.
Etymology:
This species was named in honour of the orchid grower in the Botanic Garden of the University of Heidelberg.
Notes:
It seems very similar to Aerangis pallidiflora but the leaves are shorter and wider and the spur is shorter and differently shaped. The Aerangis sp. (Holst AER-7) described in Hillerman and Holst (1986) p. 138 appears to be this species.
Distribution:
NE. & EC. Madagascar
