Savanna
550px-Upland South Africa SavannaAlthough rather dry and often very hot, the bushveld or savanna vegetation has its characteristic orchid flora. Mystacidium capense is the most common epiphytic orchid here, growing on various trees or even on tree-forming, succulent Euphorbia species. Ansellia africana, the largest epiphytic orchid in southern Africa, is mainly found in the bushveld in northern areas. Other epiphytes are Acampe pachyglossa and Cyrtorchis praetermissa. There are also some terrestrial species, especially in the genera Bonatea, Habenaria and Eulophia.Particularly conspicuous are Eulophia petersii and Eulophia horsfallii when in bloom, because of their 3 m tall inflorescences.
